Thank you Naida and Chris for your hard work yesterday morning. The beds look great! I’m shocked at how much we accomplished. I finished the Island bed and the one by the bench last night. Just have a few to pull under the Weeping Willow tree. I’ll take care of that in the next few days. How rewarding it was when I left yesterday morning to see a family at the picnic table (gingham table-cloth and all) under the Willow preparing for a picnic lunch. Again last evening folks were enjoying that same table, without the branches in their faces. That made it all worth it. It was nice to have community members thank us for what we were doing. I’m happy it is so appreciated.

Linda:
The beds look terrific!! I remember how overgrown they were when I was down there working on the sundial. That weeping willow is a magnificent specimen…I am so glad you trimmed it up so that people can enjoy the view while using the picnic table.
This folks is what community involvement is all about! We need more members like yourself, Chris and the tireless weeding machine Naida …and less of those who choose to sit on the sidelines and let others do the work.
For those who don’t know, both Linda and Chris are involved in the website; Chris maintains the Dorsch Library Gardens and there isn’t a garden between here and Milan that Naida and her crew doesn’t have a hand in maintaining…including the office garden.
These beds were put in by the association two years ago, with the understanding that the City provide mulch and ongoing maintenance. For whatever reason, neither mulch nor maintenance materialized. As a result the gardens began to fall into disrepair and were in a sorry state until you decided to renovate them.
Well done ladies!!
Please let me know if you would like some of my Saturday W&L crew to come over and help you finish up.
Frank
I don’t think I’ll need anyone Saturday. If the rain holds out I’ll finish up the bed under the Willow and then be out to the extention office. Of course, that’s if my energy hold out as well.
What a great time spending the morning with Linda and Chris and the mosquitoes were not bad! It is so much more rewarding the pull weeds in the company of beautiful ladies! We are desperate for mulch in these gardens. Most weeds had grown completely into the landscape fabric and were impossible to get out without disturbing the fabric. We actually pulled up the fabric and then had to work the weed roots out of it before laying it back down. In some areas it was a loosing battle (and will take a bit of chemical help), Now I’m afraid, with so little mulch covering it, the wind will catch it if we can’t get some help from the city of Monroe to supply some mulch.
Thanks for YOUR hard work and leadership, Linda. I wonder if we could put one of our Master Gardener signs there. Talk about a place that is very visible to the community. It would certainly be a great advertisement of our group as this park and path are constantly in use.
Finished weeding the Willow bed this morning. The few fallen leaves from the willow acted as a bit of mulch. There’s not much there other than landscape fabric. It needs mulching. We’ll see what we can do about this.
Nice job! Sorry family obligations prevented me from helping.
